Italian Alberto Nonino had a nightmare during the U20 World Cup, where his genitals fell out of his shorts.
The decathlon athlete was competing in the 400m event at the end of the first day of competition in Cali, Colombia, when disaster struck.
The 18-year-old got off to a good start from the blocks, but soon he was repeatedly reaching for his crotch instead of waving his arms as he ran down the house straight.
Eagle-eyed viewers saw the unfortunate reason Nonino’s run was jeopardized when he tried to contain his thunder as it failed repeatedly during the race.
Replays showed that he started well, but fell further and further behind as he reacted to his situation.
He finished last with a time of 51.57 seconds.
Journalist David Sanchez de Castro’s summary of the incident — and Nonimo’s masculinity — has since gone viral.
“Maybe I misunderstood myself. His penis escaped from the side of his shorts and he had to hold it because he couldn’t run properly, which is normal when your dongle is swinging back and forth,” the reporter said.
Nonino has since taken to Instagram to show his anger at how the incident has been reported around the world.
“I just want to talk to you about the commotion there has been on blogs and social media in general,” he said in a Story.
“I am aware that it was clearly an accident and I would like to tell you that I am aware of the reaction and that you do not have to send me the links to the blogs that are out there.
“I try to laugh about it now, but immediately afterwards I felt terrible and I am grateful to my friends and family for helping me process what happened a few hours later.
“The journalistic world is concerned about cases of bullying all over Italy and around the world and then publishes these articles that could have done a lot of damage to a more sensitive person.”
Spanish news agencies have speculated that Nonino’s episode could be the result of the lack of underwear.
