Rachel Homan eliminated PointsBet Invitational curling

FREDERICTON — Rachel Homan’s third-placed team was eliminated from the PointsBet Invitational on Friday after dropping a 7-6 decision to Kristie Moore’s sixth-seeded team.

Moore, filling in for absent skip Casey Scheidegger, scored two runs in the ninth end and held Homan to a single in the 10th.

Since no traditional extra ends are used in this event, Moore sealed the win by finding the rings with her draw to the button after Homan’s throw ran out of paint.

Second-seeded Kaitlyn Lawes also qualified for the last four in the single-knockout competition by beating No. 10 Penny Barker 9-4.

Fifth-seeded Jennifer Jones advanced by beating No. 13 Selena Sturmay 11-9 and first-seeded Kerri Einarson doubled up on No. 8 Kelsey Rocque 10-5.

In the men’s draw, Edmonton’s Brendan Bottcher defeated Saskatoon’s Colton Flasch 10-3 to earn a spot in Saturday’s semifinal against Matt Dunstone of Kamloops, BC

Dunstone scored an 8-7 win over Glenn Howard of Penetanguishene, Ont.

Brad Gushue of St. John’s, Nfld. will meet Reid Carruthers of Winnipeg in Saturday’s other semifinal.

Gushue defeated Toronto’s John Epping 8-4, while Carruthers defeated Calgary’s Kevin Koe 8-6.

The game continues through Sunday at Willie O’Ree Place.
