Jon Moxley Details Interesting Way Blackpool Combat Club Was Formed

2022 was the year of the Blackpool Combat Club, from the group’s violent beginnings at AEW Revolution, complete with the arrival of William Regal, to Wheeler Yuta’s bloody initiation into Anarchy in the Arena at AEW Double or Nothing. The group has also been bolstered by the arrival of Claudio Castagnoli and Jon Moxley who defeated Hiroshi Tanahashi for the AEW Interim World Championship at AEWxNJPW: Forbidden Door.

But even more interesting than the success of the BCC? Their formation, at least as told by Moxley when he appeared on “The Sessions with Renee Paquette”, presented by Mox’s wife.

“There wasn’t a big plan or anything like that,” Moxley said. “It was – I was going to wrestle with Bryan because I was going to wrestle with Bryan (previously), and then I went to rehab. So we needed a reason to wrestle. Bryan said something about, ‘Maybe I can put you on the “I think we’re a team. But you know I’m a bad guy and you don’t trust me.” I had done something similar with Jericho where he wanted me to join the Inner Circle… We’re going to do a promo in the ring I don’t know what Bryan is going to say, he doesn’t know what I’m going to say.

“Bryan introduces me, in the ring on TV, that we have to be a team, and he talks about how we can take young guys and mold and, ‘You’ve got no one watching you get back. We can dominate this place.’ All these things he said in the promo, and I first listened to them in the ring and he made such a compelling case. And the audience, you could see the audience saying, ‘Huh, you know, that actually makes a lot of sense.’ It wasn’t like Jericho and the Inner Circle where they were total bad guys like if you join them you would go to the dark side. Bryan made a very good case. People reacted strongly to the idea, like, ‘I think he has a point.’”

After some thought, Moxley concluded that the idea had merit. And he wasn’t the only one who thought so.

“I texted Bryan and I was like, ‘Man, I’m not going to lie to you. I was thinking, what if we did that?'” Moxley said. “He said, ‘I thought the same thing!’ I can’t think of a good reason to say no in real life or as a character. Either one of us or we both talked to Tony… He didn’t see the whole vision at first, he said, ‘Yeah, you can do it for a few weeks, then break up or whatever.’ Me and Bryan saw the vision, I could see we were both seeing exactly the same thing.”

Moxley later explained how Regal got involved with the group.

“Regal was just fired,” Moxley said. “I hadn’t spoken to him in a while, I don’t know if he is actually available. I don’t know if he wants to work, I don’t know what his contractual status is or if he would even be interested. I’m just a fantasy booking, but Regal’s in a relationship with me, he’s in a relationship with Bryan, and we’re doing this story right now, and I kind of had the vision that he came in and broke the buzz (at Revolution).

“So I kind of threw that out. And Bryan said, ‘Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. He’s interested and Tony’s already talked to him. He’s available.’ So everyone thought the same, they’d already talked to him and said, ‘Yeah, he’d be in the PPV.’ Perfect.”

While the pairing of Danielson, Moxley and Regal came together quite naturally, Moxley revealed Wheeler Yuta was led to the BCC due to other circumstances.

“The Wheeler problem was an accident,” Moxley said. ‘…I should be wrestling with Brian Kendrick. The match is canceled an hour before the show. ‘What do we do? We’re opening the show, the show starts in an hour.’ Tony’s like, ‘Wheeler!’ I’m like, ‘Perfect – Wheeler.’ We go and have a little game. That was before or after Bryan did the promo, and he’s one of the guys I think Bryan is called by name. It just came naturally, and before you know it he’s in the group. But the people were so sincere and natural behind him and accepted the story, and it was like, ‘Here we go. Now it’s a thing.’”
