A man in Iowa has been infected with the state’s first likely case of monkeypox, according to health officials.

The man was likely infected during a recent international trip and is in isolation, according to the Iowa Department of Public Health.

Officials are tracing contacts to track possible exposure to other individuals.

The virus originates from wild animals, but is sometimes transmitted to humans, and most cases are confined to Central and West Africa.

On June 28, US health officials extended guidelines for people to be vaccinated against monkey pox to include men who have recently had sex with other men at parties.

In the United States, about 460 cases of monkeypox have been reported in 32 states.

The World Health Organization said on June 27 that the current monkeypox outbreak is “moderate” and also said the number of cases is “probably underestimated”.

“The overall risk is rated as moderate in [the] globally, as this is the first time cases and clusters have been reported simultaneously in five WHO regions,” the WHO said. “At a regional level, the risk in the European region is considered high due to the report of a geographically widespread outbreak involving several newly affected countries were involved, as well as somewhat atypical clinical presentation of cases. In other WHO regions, the risk is considered moderate, taking into account epidemiological patterns, potential risk of case imports and capacity to detect cases and respond to the outbreak.”
