Belgium vs Canada LIVE! World Cup 2022

hibaut Courtois saved an early penalty and Michy Batshuayi scored the only goal to give Belgium a 1-0 victory over Canada at the World Cup on Wednesday, bringing the North American team back to the tournament after 36 years.

The Canadians have yet to collect a point or even score a goal in four World Cup games, including the three games since their debut in 1986.

Still, they beat second-place Belgium at times at the Ahmad Bin Ali stadium, with Canadian team star Alphonso Davies squandering the best chance when his penalty was blocked by Courtois.

With Eden Hazard ineffectual and Kevin De Bruyne’s passing unusually wrong, Belgium often relied on the long ball from behind and that tactic led to the goal in the 44th minute. Centre-back Toby Alderweireld split the defense with his pass and Batshuayi ran on to pilot a left-footed finish into the far corner.

Batshuayi only played as first-choice striker Romelu Lukaku was injured and could potentially miss the entire group stage.

Michy Batshuayi’s stunning first-time finish secured Belgium all three points with a 1-0 win in their opening Group F game, but they were lucky to beat Canada.

The former Chelsea striker struck in the 44th minute after a long ball from ex-Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld.

The Maples Leafs should have been ahead at the time after dominating the first half and winning a penalty for a Yannick Carrasco handball after Tajon Buchanan’s volley.

FT: Belgium 1-0 Canada

Belgium are looking forward to a victory against an impressive looking Canadian side to start their World Cup campaign with three points.

Canadian garbage

64:00 – 20 tries from Canada, a score they could only have dreamed of before the game.

At the moment, however, it means little.

Game management from Belgium

74:00 – Canada seems to have run out of steam. Belgium looks like this.

Belgium is finally starting to master the game.

Roberto Martinez has put his substitutes to good use to push back control, but they still don’t look like tournament contenders on this show.

Here comes Trossard

62:00 – Trossard, one of the Premier League’s best players this season, replaces Hazard.

Feels like a changing of the guard given Hazard’s rather lukewarm showing.

Canada is slowing down

57:00 – To Belgium’s credit for tightening things up a bit, but Canada just isn’t creating that much in the second half.

The game was up for grabs in the first 45 minutes.

Belgium’s two substitutes admit they have had a hard time. Thomas Meunier replaces Yannick Carrasco – who gave away a penalty.

Youri Tielemans is out for Amadou Onana in a defensive substitution. Canada is still pushing for the equalizer in the second half.

48:00 – David nods wide as Canada starts the second half on the front foot.
